I am a huge fan of the silk and linen ring slings from Sakura Bloom. They are so versatile and beautiful. However, there are benefits to a wrap conversion ring sling as well. If I had to pick my favorite, I am not sure that I could!
So, what is a wrap conversion ring sling?
Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s a woven wrap that has been converted into a ring sling. There are tons of options available. If you have a favorite wrap converted into a ring sling as a custom, OR you could simply purchase them already converted from a retailer you know and trust.
Thanks to Carry Me Away Slings I was given the opportunity to try out the coveted Tula Wrap Conversion Ring Sling! Tula ring slings are made of a soft and super supportive Tencel® (55%, Cotton 45%) blend and top-quality aluminum SlingRings.
Right out of the box the Tencel blend is not exactly “soft”. In fact, it was a bit stiff and it felt a little rough. I was a little concerned, so I immediately I gave it a bath in hopes of softening it up.
**By the way! It is recommended that you always wash any woven wrap carrier before using. This is because when many times when you receive your woven in the box it is in what is referred to as “loom state”. Which means that the wrap needs to be washed in order to tighten up and soften the fibers.**
I hand washed my Tula WCRS in cold water, hung to dry, and steam ironed. Let me tell you, it was like a whole new wrap! Fluffy, soft, and so smooth I was worried it might slip right through the rings. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it stuck right in place without any slipping. Even with my 27 lb toddler on our shopping trip through Target!
I am SO impressed by Tencel. It is soft, SO supportive, and almost “fluffy” feeling without being bulky or thick. This is good because bulky, thick wraps can be very difficult to adjust. It’s also incredibly breathable so it’s not too hot. I would have no reservations wearing this baby in the summertime.
I would say that the Tencel blend WCRS is comparable in support to my 100% cotton WCRS, but SO much softer, and a bit lighter. The biggest benefit to the Tencel blend is the fact that it required little to no breaking in to get it as soft and bouncy as it was. My 100% cotton WCRS has been through months of breaking in before it became as perfectly soft, supportive, and broken in as it currently is.
The Tula Wrap Conversion Ring Sling is a very nice width, not to wide so that it’s difficult to adjust, but wide enough to get a very comfortable seat for a toddler. This is another benefit to a wrap conversion. They are generally wider, because they are made from woven wraps meant to be wide enough to get a good deep seat.
Below is a comparison of the width of my 100% cotton BBSlen Pineapple (bottom), Tula WC (middle), and a Sakura Bloom Essential Silk Pink Sand (top). You can see that the Sakura Bloom sling is narrower than a wrap conversion.
There are benefits to having both a narrow and a wider sling. A narrower sling being easier to adjust and pop in an out, a wider sling allowing you a deeper seat for taller little ones. Don’t be fooled though, my very tall toddler fits into our Sakura Bloom silk and linen slings very comfortably!
I would highly recommend the Tula Wrap Conversion Ring Sling to anyone who is new to ring slings, wrap conversions, or baby carriers in general. Like any ring sling, it requires a bit of a learning curve to get the hang of proper use and wear. However, it is totally worth the effort in the end. Ring slings in my opinion are the most effortless and easy to use carrier option out there.
