You may not know who Kate Conner is, but you probably know about her blog post that reached more than 2 million people in less than 2 weeks. The post “Ten Things I Want To Tell Teenage Girls” was so popular because it spoke truth, and life, and was painfully honest without being condescending. Her upcoming book based on this blog post “ENOUGH: 10 Things We Should Be Telling Teenage Girls” is just as compelling. Her writing is very matter-of-fact, but at the same time she is incredibly sincere and witty. She seems like the kind of woman you want to be your best friend so you can call her at midnight for advice.
As a mother of a young son, I worry about the future world he will grow up in. This book opened my eyes to the issues that are very real for young adults, not just girls. Girls just happen to be especially vulnerable to the pressures of mainstream media and society.
Kate talks about the “beauty trap” in which all women, not just teenage girls, find themselves in. She reached my heart when she explains how women today find every other type of women beautiful, yet they are unable to see the beauty in themselves. Our desire to be everything that we are not leaves us sad and unfulfilled. We tan, we color our hair, our skin, our teeth, and still without a different perspective on beauty, we will never truly be content.
Kate’s views on teenage drama are incredibly enlightening. She urges teenage girls to focus all of their powerful emotions into something to feel passionate about. Instead of letting her passion come out in the form of pointless drama, and Facebook over sharing.I urge every parent, teacher, sister, friend, co-worker, next-door-neighbor, passing acquaintance to any young girl to read this book! It was an eye-opening look at what we really owe the teenage girls in our lives. You won’t regret this read!
Kate currently counsels Teenagers via text message, so she is well versed in their “language” so-to-speak. Which is why I am so glad that she also wrote a book written directly to teenage girls that I am sure is just as good!
